So maybe I'm gonna look at doing another site rewrite. I'd like to hear from people to what features they'd like to see. I'm tempted to rewrite everything in python as a learning exercise and would like to hear what people want.

I'm thinking of:

[*] allowing for galleries (so you can upload a grouping of photos),
[*] private photos/galleries (so you can upload something but it wont appear in the normal galleries and can only be seen via direct linking)
[*] live chat system
[*] allow auth via open account methods.. ie facebook/google+ etc
[*] update forum
[*] deploy css based site

Any additions?

Allow tagging when uploading images
Consider multi-image uploads (at least maybe for registered users over X amount of time?)

Umm I dunno, there's loads of things. I'll think more.

those are all great ideas guys. i'm not sure what the advantage of having a direct linked image would be though.
does "update the forum" mean voting might come back? i loved that option.
a search by key words in comments might be good to find pics, for pullovers or whatever, that people named.

most important, i want the option to be able to reach through the screen and knock the shit out of a few people.

a grouping of some sort of pics named all the same would be cool. "random, ..........., cameltoe, yada yada yada, other than the obvious tagging system.

and free $100 bills on Mondays.

I'm pretty happy with not having the horrendous slowdown that's been happening regularly at this time each week. Guess that should have been under "first world problems" while it was happening.

I think the "allow auth via open account methods.. ie facebook/google+ etc" might bring some new blood to the site - so it's probably a good idea.

I also think having some of the features available only to those who have signed up is a good idea - it will encourage people to not hide behind the anon tag.

Yeah, that was always the problem with automating it. Well, there's a few, particularly on this site (some of the issues are lesser on the porn side) but.. there's not typically enough votes to distinguish a weekly winner, they'd all be along the same lines (not saying I don't choose things on the same line but I try to mix it up at least a little bit whenever I bother doing it), and the last one is page loading size. Unlike the thumbs in the gallery which are generated and small, the IOTW on the front page is the FULL image just shrunk in-browser. This means that if, say, people liked the 5 meg Mars rover picture I uploaded a few weeks ago, page load time would be 20 seconds for most people (or 25 minutes for those on a modem) which isn't acceptable

Given one of the things search engines profile and rank against is page load time, I still try to keep things as fast as possible (which is one of the reasons for the recent hardware replacement, to try and make things a little snappier around here).

On the porn side we get enough votes but I still try to keep things 'relatively' tasteful on the main page, don't go for full spread-eagle shots etc - which typically perform the best in voting (same as bikini shots do here).

It's a tricky one. And honestly if people nominated pictures in my 'suggest an IOTW' thread I'd probably do it more often too

Flexible image scaling: WHen viewing an image, if I have free space on my browser window (particularly on my desktop with high res screen), let's use it - rather than the image being scaled smaller than it needs to be and having to expand it.

Votes inspire return views and debate
Polls inspire community
Forums inspire tumbleweeds

It helps but really it's a bit random If there's been a good image with some good votes uploaded recently it's likely to be chosen, otherwise I flick around and try to find something good.

I like all the ideas so far.

I am still wanting a way to know who uploaded the pic before viewing it so I am putting that out again I know most think that is trivial, and it is, but I'd still like it.

If you're gonna change the stars coding then stop it from going to another image after voting. I don't want an image in my face I didn't choose to look at.

The number of views counter is kinda flawed too. It should be one view per user counted.

How about an auto-refresh at least for the gallery page? I think that would be pretty cool.

Change the posting rules to reflect something closer to reality too.

The need for clicks is a commercial reality.
Assuming you have users online...
Voting and going to the next pic is very common practice, deployed in many different ways.
I would like to see "new uploads since my last visit".

Re the moving to next image, that discussion goes back a long, long time (back to 2004 when Revert still existed here) where I think he wanted it to go to a random image and I said that I wanted it to go to next image after somebody voted. The idea being that, at least when we had a small number of pictures, it'd be easier to find the oldest (new) image that you haven't seen and then vote your way through to current.

I think it was even implemented as random image for a while, and the link at the top said "next image" instead of "random image" if I recall.

New images since my last visit would be cool though, particularly on the porn side, not quite as relevant here (though there's been a few pics posted lately which is nice to see). Though that would also tie in with my idea of finding the image and voting your way through.

The counter.. well, as far as the site is concerned it's served you again so it's a new view. In the same way that if you go to McDonalds and buy a Big Mac every day, just because they've fed you before doesn't mean it's not a new burger The page generation is still loaded from the database, so it's a fresh hit every time (even the side boxes will change if you refresh - it's all dynamic).

It's not so much a commercial reality on this site though, as we don't have any paid advertising here - it's porn that keeps things afloat (well, it used to generate about 80% of the costs but now with the new server it's probably closer to 35%).
