There are many factors that are not the same between the wild west and now, but if you want to draw the comparison if open carry was allowed the criminals would just find the next target and crime would not go down, just like in the wild west when stage coaches started having a shotgun rider the robberies moved to banks or trains. Anecdotal evidence at least shows that the greater the defense system the greater the attack needs to be, whether that be personally or nationally. It also gives the person with the defenses a false sense of security. The only thing open carry would do is up the level of violence and armaments of the criminals. Instead of holding you at gunpoint to rob you of your wallet, they will shoot you and take your wallet and your gun.
