Actually I am not sure about the names at the moment, someone told me the name when I took the pictures, but I forgot it, it was few months ago. However they must be birds that migrate from north Europa to Africa (I guess) and use to have a break in the Lagoon od Orbetello in Touscany (where the picture has been taken).

they look like flamingoes to me too. Did they sound like thousands of frogs croaking and did many of them have their heads in the water mining for food? (It looks like this is the case but my eyesight isn't what it was so I can't quite make out the detail)

I haven't seen actual flamingoes since travelling in the Camargue area of France.

I see from the following site that flamingoes have only two colonies in Italy.

Great shot of them flying - and added bonus of no voracious mosquitoes to have to brush away either while looking!

in fact the colony where I took the pictures is in the map suggested bye rreptile, it is in the Lagoon of Orbetello, the one reported in this picture that I published:

Orbetello is the town in the middle of the lagoon, and when I took the pictures of the flamingos I was at the end of the town, left side of the lagoon.

And yes, there were not many mosquitos, but only because it was before the sunset...after sunset I wouldn't stay there!

Even before sunset in the Camargue, the mosquitoes were fierce and legion. I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like there AFTER sunset!
