"This view of the shock wave condensation collars backlit by the sun
occurred during the launch of Atlantis on STS-106 and was captured on an
engineering 35mm motion picture film. One frame was digitized to make this still
image. Although the primary effect is created by the Orbiter forward fuselage,
secondary effects can be seen on the SRB forward skirt, Orbiter vertical
stabilizer and wing trailing edges (behind SSME's)."

Hey John_Stone, do you know how far from the ground the shuttle was when this
happened? Just interested.........great pic.

Mind you, there's got be a better way to travel into space. Filling large steel
cannisters with explosives and strapping human beings to it, is extremely
dangerous and and extremely limited. We need a new type of "physics"
if we're to advance ourselves beyond our own solar system. Maybe we're just not
meant to go there...........
ToucanSam Report This Comment Date: August 10, 2005 05:13PM
No doubt if we could harness electromagnetic propulsion, or light particles, or
something not even thought of before. The solid and liquid fuel is defnately
inafencent and unfeasable to refuel on the fly.
John_Stone Report This Comment Date: August 10, 2005 08:34PM
SFA, I don't know how far up it was, but the sound barrier breach occured
between :39 and :46 seconds after liftoff (the math should be pretty easy to
do); the trip to orbit is 8 min. Seperation occurs about 2:40 into the flight.
4:30 minutes into the lauch Atlantis was travelling at 5300 mph.

Hey Sweet_FA and ToucanSam, my dad has sold some of the equipment used to test
the new nuclear propulsion system. Not only that, they might make a nuclear
source of power for homes.
John_Stone Report This Comment Date: September 13, 2005 06:17PM
Home Nuclear Power? Can one think of anything more insane? Can you imagine?:
>Kaboom!< "Oops, there go the Johnsons... better get into the
fallout shelter again."

JohnMcClane Report This Comment Date: October 22, 2005 03:34PM
John_Stone, what you've failed to relize is that nuclear power for a home needs
such a small amount for power that even if it was to go Kaboom!, it would be no
worse then your house catching fire. Besides, they are designing it so it's all
self contained. Geez, I hate uneducated people.
