When I spent time overseas, I visited Tokyo. Although a crowded, bustling metropolis, I was never made to feel like a stranger. The Japanese I've met (and drank with) were the nicest, most friendly and congenial people I've ever met in my life. I don't understand how one beer costs $12, though.
