Led by France, the European Union has informed the world of it's intention to supply advanced weaponry to China. This was banned after Beijing's bloody crackdown in 1989 on protesters during the Tiananmen Square demonstrations. France feels this will lead to better ties with the communist nation and check American influence in the region. French arms suppliers will also be happy. This move will upset the balance of power in the region and has apparently encouraged China to put into motion it's plans to start a war with Taiwan. The overwhelming majority of Taiwan's population do not want to join China. This war would be undoubtedly cause a severe disruption to the world economy. Thank France for contributing to world stability!!

The fucking French. Why don't they stick to surrendering, backstabbing and pointless nuclear tests? It's what they excel at.

O, and who has been filling south korea and japan with troops for the past 20 years? Yeah, the USA.

The situation there is critical - with north korea advancing with its nuclear research and china getting close and closer to a war with Taiwan. Its gonna need great diplomatical sacrifices in order to prevent war.

LOL, somebody ALWAYS has to find that American is at fault somehow. Yeah, the USA armed forces are in South Korea to prevent the North from AGAIN invading the South! North Korea is a belligerent nation! One could say that the US military presence in the far east has allowed stability and progress to happen their for the past 20 years.

Taiwan should probably respond by ceasing shipments of computer chips and electronic parts to Europe, or at least France. I wonder how France would do without new computer parts. It really looks to me that France is simply using the concept of a unified Europe to further it own agenda. It's obvious that France will impose it's will and intimidate smaller nations in the union into supporting it's policies. We got a small glimpse of that when France threatened Poland politically when Poland supported the Iraq war. Essentially, France is using the European Union to increase it's global power, and fulfill it's aspirations of competing with the United States. Something that is apparently an obsession of Chirac. Maybe Chirac has visions of being the next Napoleon.

Well Rogue_1, to answer your question, yes, the United States has pledged to defend Taiwan in the event of armed conflict with China. It would not be a good situation at all. Whenever China conducts military exercises near the strait, the U.S. moves a carrier group into the area. Also, the motherboard and video card you are using right now were probably made in Taiwan. As well as the thousands of Chinese killed, It wouldn't be a good thing for anybody if China turned Taiwan into a smoking ruin. Chirac is playing a dangerous game.

I thought Clinton and Kerry said the United Nations had any problems under control and the US should stop spreading imperialism and democracy around the world. OK, lets see how they deal with the coming slant eye problem.

BOO HOO America. So mad that France didn't join your little group of friends in invading Iraq for money. BOO FUCKING HOO. The statement at the top of the page is false. France is shipping parts for satellites that are used for surveilance. Not very advanced when you consider America already has hundreds of them in orbit watching China. The American government blew this into something bigger by claiming these satellite parts could shoot down US satellites, which it now turns out is false because these satellites have no propulsion thus they couldn't shoot the earth nevermind a satellite. Stop blowing every little incident into another 'just' cause.

anonymous@43152 where are you getting you information from??? Satellite parts??? WTF? The issue is VERY MUCH about advanced weaponry. The United States is talking about stopping shipments of advanced weapon systems to Europe so that they don't end up selling it to the Chinese and end up killing U.S. soldiers in the far east.
Did you just completely make that up?? Amazing how people will delude themselves and distort reality with their anti-American bias.

May I point out as A UK citizen, France had no problems selling arms to Argentina when we were fighting them in the Falklands. Even though they are meant to be our ally. Twats.

Whereas the yanks supplied the very handy Sidewinder 9M which was used to great success during the campaign. Thats what being an ally is all about. Backing your friends up, not crapping on them for a couple of Euros.
