My Uncle retired from the NZ Army as a Colonel, after being the youngest Major they had ever had up to that point (I believe the record has been broken since), so I will ask him next time I see him, 90130. But if he, or anybody else who served, tells me they fought/served for the flag I'll tell them the same thing I told you (although probably more politely) and get them to consider what they believe the flag represents that they really fought/served for.

I do not, and would not, question their patriotism, or bravery, just their choice of words to describe what they fought/served for.
