Hey, Fossil...here's a link to Digital photography review's full evaluation of the DSC-505V. It's old news, but should light years ahead of that Vivitar you inherited.

Yeah, looks like you'd better stock up on some of Sony's proprietary "Memory stick" media, too. This camera does not use the more familiar CF or SD cards which seem to be the industry standard. If you have CF slots on your computer, you can buy a memory stick reader/adapter that allows you to plug a memory stick into them or the USB. Or just use the camera's USB cable to download images from the camera itself. You can buy Memory sticks up to 2Gb or more now. Sony's newer DSC-F828 camera allows you to use both media formats; it has slots for both!

i figured out what i was doing wrong w/my camera!
the "e.v. and white balance" has to be set to the desired brightness.....duh!
i just thought it would adjust by itself,*no*!

maybe i'll have some better shots outside now!
