I think you're a bit hard on babelfish. you can't really expect a program like that to understand all the subtleties dependent on context. Look, for example, at the Oxford English Dictionary entry for the word "set": it's one of our smaller words but has so many variations of meaning that it boasts the largest dictionary entry. How could any translation program cope with that? At least babelfish gives =some= help with translation.

This is the fun people had when Babelfish was a new kid on the block. They would take a sentence and translate it from english through 5 different languages, and back into english.

It is very much like the game "Telephone"... where a group sits in a circle, one person whispers a phrase to hir partner, and that phrase is passed along from person to person until it reaches the original person and spoken out loud. You can guess the result.

However, you'd think Babelfish, after all these years (its like 10 years old now) would have some sense of basic phrases like "hello, howe are you, I am fine". I mean really. How more basic can you get in a language?
